After Norway’s Oscar Breakthrough: 6 Norwegian Series U.S. Audiences Shouldn’t Miss
With Norway newly in the global spotlight following its first Academy Award win for Sentimental Value, attention is turning to the country’s broader storytelling boom—particularly in television, where in the last few years, Norwegian creators have been quietly producing some of Europe’s most compelling and distinctive series. Nordic-focused streamer Viaplay offers a slate of standout Norwegian titles that showcase the country’s range and ambition. Available to binge now: The Fortress – “Smartly written… thrillingly fast-paced” (TIME) and “Supremely satisfying” (Houston Chronicle) | Led by Tobias Santelmann (Netflix’s Harry Hole) and Russell Tovey and winner of Best Screenplay at Series Mania, the timely dystopian drama series is set in an eerily familiar 2037, where Norway has chosen to sever all ties with the rest of the world and grapples with isolation, identity, and global instability. Trailer Stayer – ‘Best New Shows’ Selection…“Outstanding Cast” (Time Magazine) and “Beautiful, deep, intense, and fabulous hour drama” (ABC22) | Led by Aksel Hennie (The Martian, Sisu) – who also directs – this high-end drama follows an aging rock musician forced to rebuild his life—and rediscover purpose in music and fatherhood—after a personal tragedy. Trailer The Architect – “Vicious and funny” (The New York Times) | Starring Eili Harboe (Succession’s final season), this innovative, short-form dramedy is a smart, satirical take on ambition and survival in a broken housing market—blending bleak humor with incisive social commentary. Trailer Furia, Seasons 1 & 2 – “Jaw-clenchingly suspenseful… gripping and unpredictable.” (Foreign Crime Drama) | A high-stakes political thriller exploring the rise of extremism in Europe, combining intimate character drama with urgent geopolitical tension. Trailer Fenris - “Thoroughly engrossing” (The Wall Street Journal) and “A rarely explored world… an exceptional series.” (MovieWeb) | Directed by Simen Alsvik (Lilyhammer), this tense, atmospheric mystery unfolds in a remote forest community, where disappearances may be tied to both human secrets and wolves in the wild. Trailer Liv Ullmann: A Road Less Traveled – “Pure pleasure” (The Wall Street Journal) | A Cannes-selected docuseries on Liv Ullmann, featuring interviews with Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, and John Lithgow—offering an intimate, star-studded portrait of one of the greatest European actresses of all-time and a window into Norway’s rich artistic legacy. Trailer Together, these series exemplify how Norway is operating at a world-class level—expanding beyond traditional Nordic noir into bold, globally resonant storytelling. Screeners are readily available for all titles.
