Inspired by Katarzyna Bonda's bestselling true crime book, the six-part crime thriller Murderesses makes its US debut on the Viaplay streaming service on Tuesday, May 21 with all six episodes available to binge. The gripping adaptation follows the family and life of a rookie cop uncovering her missing ex-cop father's fate, leading to treacherous family secrets and a corrupt police scheme.
Though Karolina graduates from the police academy with honors, she’s the only woman in her department and regularly comes up against toxic masculinity from her colleagues, which she handles just like she handles the criminals on the street. Her father, a former police officer who battled organized crime, had gone missing and she continued to search for her father, even though her superior urged her to leave the case to other officers. As she uncovers his fate and her mother’s shocking confession, Karolina realizes that to win against the evil she is fighting, she will have to get her hands dirty.
Former court reporter, Katarzyna Bonda is Poland’s most popular crime novelist. Murderesses is adapted from her best-selling novel, “Polish Murderesses”, which was as her website states, “written to show that the world is not black and white, all of us harbour a degree of aggression, and the dividing line between us and the protagonists is fluid.” The idea to write Polish Murderesses came from Bonda’s experience as a court correspondent for a Polish daily newspaper. The site states, “At that time, several women were on murder trials in Warsaw. The media created their image: that of evil, degenerate, merciless beasts, often equally beautiful as they were devoid of human feelings. They came from different backgrounds, they killed for various motives, their personalities, age and appearance were not alike. In a quest to find answers to questions that troubled her – How could it be that these women took part in such brutal murders, either killing the victim themselves or planning everything in detail and using male accessories to commit the actual crime? What are they like? Why? What makes them different to other women? What is the source of their aggression? – Bonda conducted several, rare interviews, lasting several hours each” which in turn inspired this six-part drama series.
Directed by Kristoffer Rus (Too Old for Fairy Tales), the first-rate European cast features Izabela Kuna, Maja Pankiewicz, Eliza Rycembel, and Mateusz Kmiecik.
The six-part series is in Polish with English subtitles.
