Winner of six ‘Polish Oscars’ with a record 16 nominations, the stylish, Tarantino-esque feature film, Scarborn (Kos), makes its highly anticipated U.S. debut on Thursday, April 30 and U.K. debut on Monday, April 27 on European streamer Viaplay.
Set in 18th-century Poland and inspired by true events, the film follows Ignac (Bartosz Bielenia, star of Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi), an illiterate serf on a dangerous quest to prove his noble lineage. His journey becomes entwined with revolutionary leader Tadeusz Kościuszko (Jacek Braciak, Leave No Traces), as tensions rise toward a national uprising. Blending historical drama with the energy of a revenge thriller, Scarborn delivers a stylish, genre-bending take on Polish history—combining visceral action, dark humor, and a contemporary edge that has resonated strongly with audiences and critics alike.
Scarborn received the most nominations in the history of the Polish Film Awards (‘Polish Oscars’) with 16 nominations and six wins, including Best Director and Best Screenplay. Additionally, the film was the most awarded title at the prestigious Polish Film Festival, where it received nine awards including The Grand Prix-Golden Lions Award for ‘Best Film’.
Full Synopsis: Spring of 1794, Poland is in turmoil. “Kos” returns to Poland and plans to start an uprising against the Russians by mobilizing the Polish nobility and peasants. He is accompanied by his faithful friend and former slave, Domingo (Jason Mitchell, Straight Outta Compton, Mudbound). Kościuszko is followed by a ruthless Russian captain, Dunin (Robert Więckiewicz), who wants to capture the general at any cost before he triggers a national rebellion.
Meanwhile, a young peasant, Ignac (Bartosz Bielenia), a noble bastard, dreams of receiving his coat of arms and property from his illegitimate parent, Duchnowski (Andrzej Seweryn), who includes him in his will just before his death. When his father dies, the boy has to flee from his half-brother Stanisław (Piotr Pacek), who wants to prevent the execution of his father’s will. Ignac steals the will and has just two days to appear in court to prove his title of nobility. In his escape, Ignac meets Domingo. A strong bond of understanding forms between the men, even though they do not speak each other’s languages. They end up at the manor house of the Colonel’s Wife (Agnieszka Grochowska), where Kościuszko hides while waiting for negotiations with the magnates.
Kos is distrustful of Ignac and keeps him under arrest. Still, at the decisive moment, the fate of the uprising will lie in the hands of the inconspicuous noble bastard. When the moment of trial arrives, Ignac will have to choose – whether to follow his dream of nobility or join “Kos” and fight for the highest stakes with him.
The award-winning film is a thrilling, modern, action-packed, and universal story about people who overcome prejudice and differences in the name of freedom and equality.
