Creators of Iconic Chart-Topping Hits “All That She Wants”, “The Sign” and
“Don’t Turn Around” Reflect on Extraordinary Career, Featuring
Never-Before-Seen, Intimate Footage in All-New, Three-Part Documentary
As one of the most successful bands of the 1990s with one of the highest-selling debut albums globally of all time (Happy Nation/The Sign) and over 11 million monthly streaming listeners on Spotify, award-winning Swedish pop band Ace of Base chronicle their unexpected ascent to stardom and its accompanying highs and lows, in an all-new, revealing documentary series with unique, never-seen archival material. ACE OF BASE: ALL THAT SHE WANTS debuts Thursday, December 5 on the Viaplay US streaming service with all three episodes available to binge.
Featuring private, unseen home movie footage and intimate diaries, ACE OF BASE: ALL THAT SHE WANTS is a warts-and-all docuseries providing deep insight into the genesis, peaks and valleys of this hugely popular band consisting of four friends from Gothenburg, Sweden - Ulf Ekberg and the siblings Jonas, Jenny and Malin Berggren. This uncensored documentary captures Ace of Base’s fascinating story - where grandiose pop dreams, charts and money collide with relentless adversity, performance anxiety and shattered friendships. Though no one believed in them at first, the pop quartet eventually became a world sensation and Sweden's third biggest pop export after ABBA and Roxette. Thanks to such iconic #1 hits as "All That She Wants", “The Sign”, and “Don’t Turn Around,” Happy Nation/The Sign (released worldwide in 1992 and in the U.S. in 1993) has now sold 25 million copies worldwide.
But behind the successes is a deep dark side, which the series covers: Ulf Ekberg is threatened with death by right-wing extremists and forced to perform in a bulletproof vest and have bodyguards with him during the world tours. Jenny Berggren is attacked by a German fan in her home, which traumatizes her for life. Quarrels about songs and money create further friction in the quartet. When the band is at the absolute peak of their career in the mid-1990s, the band members begin to be slowly broken down by old and new demons.
ACE OF BASE: ALL THAT SHE WANTS features all-new candid interviews with band members, manager Lasse Karlsson, iconic music executive Clive Davis, as well as artists such as Wyclef Jean. Each episode is packed with behind -the-scenes clips of video shoots, recording sessions, on the road, as well as live television appearances, concerts and of course, their popular, music videos.
Produced by Nexiko and Daniel Andreasson for Viaplay, Ace of Base: All That She Wants is directed by Jens von Reis. (English and Swedish with subtitles)
