The true-crime documentary series, The Case of Iwona Wieczorek, delves into one of the most famous disappearances and unsolved mysteries in recent Polish history – a 19-year-old woman who went missing without a trace on a summer night near her seaport home. This captivating Polish series makes its exclusive US debut on Thursday, February 27 with all three episodes available to binge on the Viaplay US streaming service. The series landed at #1 on Netflix Poland when it premiered on the service there. (All episodes are English subtitled.)

On July 17, 2010, Iwona Wieczorek disappeared on her way home from a party at one of the area’s most popular clubs. She had just graduated from high school and was ready to spend the summer in Spain. The last footsteps of Iwona end just a few minutes from her house in Gdańsk, a seaport located in the far north of Poland. Since then, the case has puzzled and intrigued the whole of Poland. Was it a kidnapping, a murder or maybe even an escape? Over the years, many clues have emerged.

This gripping series raises questions about the enigmatic circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the investigation itself - from the policeman who claims the perpetrator can be identified, to the online community and journalists who have formed their own theories – to Iwona’s mother, Iwona Główczyńska, who will never give up her search.

The Case of Iwona Wieczorek features Iwona’s mother, as well as key figures involved in the case including former Homicide Department Commissioner Marek Siewiert, former Director of the Criminal Bureau of the National Police Headquarters Marek Dyjasz, and Janusz Kaczmarczyk, who served as prosecutor at the time. The series also includes interviews with Krzysztof Rutkowski, the well-known private detective who became involved shortly after Iwona’s vanishing, as well as lawyers, criminology specialists, the administrator of an online group dedicated to the case, and journalists who have been investigating Iwona’s disappearance for years.

Viaplay has hundreds of true crime stories on its service including The Bunker, Under the Radar – Secrets of a Swedish Serial Killer, Norwegian Crime Stories, Crime Scene Sweden (10 Seasons, 68 stories), Polish Murder Secrets, The Priest from Hell, In the Mind of a Criminal, Deadly Women, The Copenhagen Killer, In the Mind of a Murderer, The Prize of Silence, The Preacher’s Dark Side, A Murderer Goes Missing, and Natascha Kampusch - A Lifetime in Prison.

Produced by Jake Vision for Viaplay, The Case of Iwona Wieczorek is directed by Piotr Bernaś. (Viaplay Original, 3x45’ episodes, Polish w/English subtitles)

After Norway’s Oscar Breakthrough: 6 Norwegian Series U.S. Audiences Shouldn’t Miss

With Norway newly in the global spotlight following its first Academy Award win for Sentimental Value, attention is turning to the country’s broader storytelling boom—particularly in television, where in the last few years, Norwegian creators have been quietly producing some of Europe’s most compelling and distinctive series.   Nordic-focused streamer Viaplay offers a slate of standout Norwegian titles that showcase the country’s range and ambition. Available to binge now:   The Fortress – “Smartly written… thrillingly fast-paced” (TIME) and “Supremely satisfying” (Houston Chronicle) | Led by Tobias Santelmann (Netflix’s Harry Hole) and Russell Tovey and winner of Best Screenplay at Series Mania, the timely dystopian drama series is set in an eerily familiar 2037, where Norway has chosen to sever all ties with the rest of the world and grapples with isolation, identity, and global instability. Trailer Stayer –  ‘Best New Shows’ Selection…“Outstanding Cast” (Time Magazine) and “Beautiful, deep, intense, and fabulous hour drama” (ABC22) | Led by Aksel Hennie (The Martian, Sisu) – who also directs – this high-end drama follows an aging rock musician forced to rebuild his life—and rediscover purpose in music and fatherhood—after a personal tragedy. Trailer The Architect – “Vicious and funny” (The New York Times) | Starring Eili Harboe (Succession’s final season), this innovative, short-form dramedy is a smart, satirical take on ambition and survival in a broken housing market—blending bleak humor with incisive social commentary. Trailer Furia, Seasons 1 & 2 – “Jaw-clenchingly suspenseful… gripping and unpredictable.” (Foreign Crime Drama) | A high-stakes political thriller exploring the rise of extremism in Europe, combining intimate character drama with urgent geopolitical tension. Trailer Fenris - “Thoroughly engrossing” (The Wall Street Journal) and “A rarely explored world… an exceptional series.” (MovieWeb) | Directed by Simen Alsvik (Lilyhammer), this tense, atmospheric mystery unfolds in a remote forest community, where disappearances may be tied to both human secrets and wolves in the wild. Trailer Liv Ullmann: A Road Less Traveled – “Pure pleasure” (The Wall Street Journal) | A Cannes-selected docuseries on Liv Ullmann, featuring interviews with Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, and John Lithgow—offering an intimate, star-studded portrait of one of the greatest European actresses of all-time and a window into Norway’s rich artistic legacy. Trailer Together, these series exemplify how Norway is operating at a world-class level—expanding beyond traditional Nordic noir into bold, globally resonant storytelling. Screeners are readily available for all titles.    About Viaplay: The Viaplay streaming service features thousands of hours of premium Nordic and European series and films from Scandinavia's largest and most recognized television/streaming platform.
