Starring one of Sweden’s most popular actresses, Alexandra Rapaport (The Sandhamn Murders, No Time to Mourn/Gåsmamman, Veronika,) and directed by Martina Haag whose two bestselling novels are the basis for the film, the critically-acclaimed, award-winning feature film Little Did I Know follows one woman's intertwined journeys of self-discovery at ages 50 and 15, offering a painful, yet hopeful and illuminating view on love. Little Did I Know makes its exclusive U.S. and U.K. debuts on the Nordic/European streaming service, Viaplay on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
In the main story, 50-year-old Petra seems to have it all; the perfect marriage, a successful acting career and two devoted daughters. But slowly everything starts to unravel when she realizes something is amiss in her relationship with her husband, Anders, eventually discovering he has indeed met someone new and wants a divorce. At that point, her whole world starts to crumble.
In turn, we get to know the 15-year-old Petra, a young rowdy girl with a troubled home life, during her last semester in middle school in 1985. It’s a time when Lidingö, an island located outside Stockholm, is the start and end of Petra’s world and where her relationships with her friends feel like the most important thing, except for maybe potential boyfriends. This is when Petra’s longing for that one true love begins.
Little Did I Know is an intimate story about finding yourself in times of crisis and becoming the person you were always meant to be. It’s about handling life's ups and downs and with laughter and humor – how to survive heartbreak and divorce, how to move on with your life, how healing can open the door to new beginnings - a way that allows you to live your life to its full potential.
Little Did I Know (Det är något som inte stammer) is directed by internationally published author Martina Haag in her debut as a filmmaker and is inspired by her two bestselling novels, ‘Det är något som inte stämmer’ and ‘Livet går så fort. Och så långsamt’. The screenplay is written by Haag and Peter Arrhenius (Clark, Conspiracy of Silence, Welcome to Sweden). The lead role of 50-year-old Petra is portrayed by Alexandra Rapaport (Sandhamn Murders, No Time to Mourn, Veronika), 15-year-old Petra is played by Ella Hammarsten Liedberg (Seaside Hotel), with an exciting family connection, as her parents, Gustaf Hammarsten (Thunder in My Heart, Tillsammans) and Jessica Liedberg (The Congregation, Tillsammans), also star in the film. The cast is rounded out by Shanti Roney (Tusenbröder, Vägen Ut, Nymphomaniac) as Petra’s husband, Anders, and Adrian Macéus (Maria Wern) as young Petra’s love interest, Alexander Liljegren. The film is produced by Bigster for Viaplay, with Calle Jansson (No Time to Mourn, Veronika, Honour) and Mathias Gruffman (Veronika, Gåsmamman), serving as producers. Executive producers are Helena Larand (The Åre Murders, End of Summer) and Magnus Coinberg (Veronika, Leva Life).
